nothing special about this one. just a stock standard of the age old story. it does have nice bright, eye catching pictures that the kids will be sure to love.

Rhyming text. Primitive style illustrations. Death is not funny in a picture book.

This kind of ignoring, willfully misunderstanding, mocking, or twisting of facts may get a few Likes or giggles on Facebook, but it doesn't change the facts.

The Industrial Revolution has been a boon and a curse for humanity. We made more faster. The problem was, we made more, faster, but it's all an illusion. None of it means anything if you can't breathe the air, drink the water, eat the food…

The UN Climate Summit 2014 is happening in New York, right now. For days around the world, people who care have been taking to streets, letting their voices be heard. Activists, parents, children, celebrities, all essentially saying we have to care. http://www.un.org/climatechange/summit/ #climate2014

Leonardo DiCaprio, actor and long-time activist has been appointed UN Messenger of Peace, a sort of Climate Change Ambassador and one his first duties was a speech to the UN Climate Summit,
"As an actor I pretend for a living. I play fictitious characters often solving fictitious problems.
I believe humankind has looked at climate change in that same way: as if it were a fiction, happening to someone else's planet, as if pretending that climate change wasn't real would somehow make it go away."

Please check out the rest of the speech, it was wonderful.

We need to admit we made mistakes; now let's fix them, before it's too late. We don't have to keep believing rich men, governments, and corporations who are lying to us for money and power. We really can change.

Have you ever read the book There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly ? The latest version of this book (North South Books) was illustrated by Rashin, making this cautionary tale more up-to-date and accessible. Also an excellent book to help struggling readers. This was one of the books my cousin who taught special needs children suggested for my son who had a reading disorder.

This book always fascinated me, I don't know why.
I never knew why an old lady would swallow a fly.
I thought perhaps she had some sort of disorder,
That most certainly made her life shorter.
But it always seemed callous and cruel
To make those animals turn into stool.

Why?
Why did the old lady swallow the fly or all the other creatures?
The old lady's behaviour was not only self-destructive and lead to her demise, but it was counter-productive.
We're the old lady. We know climate change is being exacerbated by manufacturing, yet we are buying more and more stuff.
We know that the fossil fuel industry, coal, fracking, etc. are destroying the planet we live on, yet we consume more and more.
So the theory of our time, even for those who profess to love their children is, eat, drink and be merry, who cares about their tomorrows?
We keep swallowing the lies, but why? Why does it have to be economy versus environment? We can have both.
If we admit, it's true we would have to accept the recommendations, that means changing our lifestyles, possibly even make some sacrifices.
At times the green movement is its own worst enemy.
Too many people lying or exaggerating for shock value, to make points or make money. Some just too self-righteous or really flaky.
The facts should speak for themselves, but we become so easily distracted and big business uses that.

The rich will do anything to hold onto to their money and power, have no doubt about that. But they are a tiny percent of the population. There are more of us than there are of them.
People have stood together and overthrown tyranny before.

Instead of standing in line for iPhones, toys, TVs, airline tickets, stand in line to vote, stand up to those who will kill our future, our children's future for profit.

How angry would you be if you came home tonight and someone had destroyed your home? Planet Earth is our home.

This was adorable. I loved the updated ideas and the new and more realistic and funny responses to each odd thing she eats. I remember having silly conversations about why she was eating this stuff, how unrealistic it was and what her tummy would look like!

And this gives us all that. A great addition to the original!

Alannah Clarke
I was aware of the original story and I remember reading it to young children during my placement. I really enjoyed the updated version with the illustrations. Children are bound to enjoy it.

I think everyone has read a version of this nursery rhyme as a kid. It is probably ideal for kindergarteners or first graders so they can learn sequencing. I am sure kids love singing along to this silly book and trying to figure out what else she is going to swallow to try to catch the thing before it.

Nothing outstanding about this rendition of the standard rhyme. In fact, if you think about it too much it's a little gruesome what with the expressions of comic horror on the animals' faces as they're swallowed and then frenetically chase each other inside the old woman's stomach.
Steven Strothman
It was great to have such fantastic illustration bring this fun poem to life. The cat character was hilarious. The ending got thrown off a little because of the extra conversation bubbles put in.

I don't want the title of this post to deceive anyone. I am a fan of the "Old Lady" stories. I love the repetition and the predictability for young readers / listeners.

I love the bright colors used in the illustrations for this version. However, I have to admit I was very disappointed when I discovered the picture clues I thought were going to be included for each of the animals swallowed did not happen. Here is what I mean. When opening the book you see a fly swirling through the air onto the title page. On the next page, the old lady has swallowed the fly. On this same page, you see a spider hanging from a web in the upper left hand corner of the page. this makes it easy for young children to predict who might be eaten next (because there is also a cat on the page). When the page is turned, you do indeed see the lady swallow the spider. This pattern continues until the old lady swallows the dog. The next page is a cross section of the old lady's stomach with the animals chasing each other in a circle - very funny, but the pattern has stopped. The next page shows the old lady attempting to swallow the cow - also very funny, especially the milk squirting from the udder! The predictability is back once the cow has been swallowed because in the background you see a very worried purple horse.

Now, everyone knows that when the old lady swallows a horse, she dies - of course! This version actually shows the old lady lying on the ground with her feet sticking out from behind some bushes and a transport old lady angel flying off. Miraculously once the old lady has died the animals are able to escape from her belly.

Not the most realistic story ever written - because A. you can't really swallow all of those animals, and B. animals don't talk, as they do with speech bubbles in this version. Even with the issue of the cow not being on the page after the dog has been swallowed, I like this book a lot. I love the bright, bold colors and the interaction of the animals throughout. I believe this title would be a great addition to a collection of children's picture books, and for a personal collection of "Old Lady" who swallowed "whatever" books.

Most of us can remember either reading or even singing this little ditty when we were kids ourselves. Now we can share this childhood memory with the next generation, or in my case, the third generation. I remember how much fun this little silly tune was, but Rashin Kheiriyeh has managed to bring There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly alive in my life and that of my great niece and nephew.

Along with Rashin Kheiriyeh's illustrations thrill readers with their vibrant colors. Take the time to relive a moment from your childhood and help your young readers create a special on of their own.

The final was unexpected and although some may say gruesome in Portuguese folklore it's not uncommon for fairytales to have this kind of raw ending so I didn't see it as upsetting just unexpected. Of course one has to think of the child at hand as some are more prone to be chocked than others but I would like say that the one I read it to laughed and found it funny.
All and all a funny book with an unexpected ending.

K's thought on the book was that it was funny she swallowed all the animals and that when she died she became a ghost.

The story is funny as we see what animals the lady will be swallowing to get rid of the animal before that one. The pictures were illustrated well enough that it would capture the attention of the kids reading the story. The ending is different from what I remember from the original which makes the book different.

As a teacher, I would definitely buy this edition to pair with other copies that I own. I think it would be great fun to do a unit study on art and how illustrators use different techniques and mediums to portray the same story. This story in general is terrific for sequencing as well.

This is not my favorite rendition of "There was an old lady..." The illustrations are certainly colorful and humorous--the speech bubbles are a nice touch--but I could have done without the spread that illustrates the old lady's internal organs. What a fun read, but my goodness was that a dark sinister book. It seems playful at first when she swallows the fly, but to keep adding animals inside until she blew up and died may leave a kid a little frightened. This is a classic story - one I remember from my youth. The woman who swallowed a fly...and then proceeded to swallow a multitude of animals to eat the previous one.

The one thing that stands out in this book is the new illustrations. Hilarious, full-colour adaptions of this story that only add to the reading of this classic story.

Familiar story with great illustrations, although the ending was certainly unexpected. I saw a children's play for this book at my local library before I actually read it and it did not end the same way. Umm...yea. I preferred the play with its cute, little manipulatives and happy-go-lucky ending. It was more appropriate for younger kids. This version might be better suited to older youngsters. A charmingly illustrated retake on the old rhyme. Yes, these days we might find it a bit creepy that the old lady dies, but as with many traditional stories and rhymes, there are often aspects like this. Children have always loved them, and will continue to do so!
